Amlodipine Johnvasc is a medicine used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Amlodipine Johnvasc is also used to prevent chest pain caused by heart disease (angina).

Amlodipine Johnvasc 5mg a hypertension medicine that blocks the transport of calcium into the smooth muscle cells lining the arteries of the heart (coronary arteries) and other arteries of the body. Since the action of calcium is important for muscle contraction, blocking calcium transport relaxes arterial muscles and expands (dilates) coronary arteries and other arteries of the body. By dilating coronary arteries, amlodipine increases the flow of blood to the heart and is useful in preventing heart pain (angina) resulting from reduced flow of blood to the heart caused by coronary artery spasm (contraction). Relaxing the muscles lining the arteries in the rest of the body lowers blood pressure, which reduces the work that the heart must do to pump blood to the body. Reducing the work of the heart also lessens the heart muscle's need for oxygen, and thereby further helps to prevent angina in patients with coronary artery disease.

Patients’ taking Sildenafil (Viagra) and similar drugs used for treating erectile dysfunction may lead to excessive reductions in blood pressure with complications, particularly fainting upon standing (orthostatic hypotension).

Patients’ taking cholesterol-lowering medicine such as simvastatin, the dose of simvastatin should be limited to 20 mg daily by patients taking Johnvasc 5mg Amlodipine tablet.

This medicine for high blood pressure is inactivated mainly by the liver, and dosages may need to be lowered in patients with liver dysfunction.

Talk to your doctor if you're taking combined hormonal contraceptives. Some types of hormonal methods of contraception, like the combined pill and contraceptive patch, are not usually recommended for women with high blood pressure.

How to cope with side effects and what to do about:

Headaches - make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Do not drink too much alcohol. Ask your pharmacist to recommend a painkiller or pain reliever. Headaches should usually go away after the first week of taking amlodipine. Talk to your doctor if they last longer than a week or are severe.
Feeling dizzy - if amlodipine makes you feel dizzy, stop what you're doing and sit or lie down until you feel better
Flushing - try cutting down on coffee, tea and alcohol. It might help to keep the room cool and use a fan. You could also spray your face with cool water or sip cold or iced drinks. The flushing should go away after a few days. If it doesn't go away or it's causing you problems, contact your doctor.

1. How do patients’ take this medicine?

The recommended starting dose of Amlodipine (Johnvasc) 5mg for children and adults is 2.5 to 5 mg once daily. 

If the starting dose isn't working well enough (your blood pressure doesn't lower enough, or your angina isn't controlled), you may need to increase your dose to 10mg. The maximum dose for adults is 10 mg once daily and the maximum dose for children is 5 mg once daily. 

Amlodipine can be taken with or without food. 

Amlodipine must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed otherwise by your doctor, as stopping it suddenly may worsen your condition.

If you can't take amlodipine or other calcium channel blockers because of side effects, you may be able to switch to another blood pressure-lowering medicine.

2. What should do the patients do if he/she miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

• Avoid alcohol.

Limit your salt intake. This may help lower your blood pressure and improve your overall health. Speak to your doctor or dietitian about ways to cut down on your salt intake.

 Amlodipine (Johnvasc) 5mg is not normally recommended in pregnancy or when breastfeeding.

Small amounts of amlodipine may get into breast milk, but it's not known if this is harmful to the baby. Talk to your doctor as other medicines might be better while you're breastfeeding.
