This makes us defenseless against illness and other life-threatening conditions such as tuberculosis and certain types of cancer. If not properly treated, it can evolve into AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) which is the final stage in having HIV and can weaken our immune system to a greater extent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this virus being around since the early 1980s, there\u2019s still a lot of misconceptions on how it can be transmitted from one person to another. As stated by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/hiv-aids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, HIV transmission can only be done through body fluids, namely: blood, breast milk, semen and vaginal fluids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, it can be passed on through sexual contact (vaginal, anal, or oral sex), sharing needles, transplanted organs from an infected donor, and from infected women who pass the virus through pregnancy and breastfeeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cases of HIV in the Philippines<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Philippines, the first recorded case was in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10224495\/#B2-tropicalmed-08-00258\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1985<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since then, the country has been a constant victim of the HIV epidemic. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/global-hiv-tb\/php\/where-we-work\/philippines.html#:~:text=The%20Philippines%20is%20experiencing%20the,rates%20of%20tuberculosis%20(TB).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> declared that cases were considerably low before 2010 but from 2013 to 2023, the daily infections surged by 411%. The Philippines is now even recognized as one of the countries in the Western Pacific region whose growing rate is rapidly climbing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To add to that,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pna.gov.ph\/articles\/1225309#:~:text=MANILA%20%E2%80%93%20The%20Department%20of%20Health,available%20through%20government%20health%20institutions.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teodoro Herbosa, the Department of Health Secretary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even says that 55 people were infected daily in 2024. If the situation doesn\u2019t improve, we\u2019ll have 36,700 new cases by 2030 according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pna.gov.ph\/articles\/1224968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIDS Epidemic Model (AEM) and Spectrum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figure 1: A table rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Republic Act 8504 or the Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act of 1998<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a decree that promotes public awareness about HIV and protects those infected with the virus from all discriminatory and unjust treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This act also specifically entails the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating HIV educational and informational campaigns that will be implemented in schools, training centers, workplaces, and communities;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing people who are infected with HIV basic health and social services;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminating all reasons why HIV continues to spread, whether this be because of poverty, gender inequality, prostitution, marginalization, drug abuse and ignorance;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognizing the role of people with HIV in disseminating vital information and educational messages about HIV\/AIDS.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Know_If_You_Have_HIV\"><\/span><b>How to Know If You Have HIV<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With HIV\u2019s rampancy, it\u2019s important to be aware of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/getmeds.ph\/blog\/hiv-signs-and-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a person may show when they\u2019re infected by the virus. Though it may differ from one person to another, there are general signs that can help you identify whether you have contracted the virus or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the HIV symptoms in men and women are comparable to a flu:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aching muscles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Night Sweats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also look out for swollen lymph nodes, rashes, shingles, and mouth sores. It may be your body\u2019s way of signaling you that it\u2019s fighting off a virus (in this scenario, HIV).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Get_Tested_For_HIV\"><\/span><b>How to Get Tested For HIV<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several HIV testing options you can do to determine whether you\u2019ve been infected with HIV. These testing options vary on how long it takes to show the results and the window period wherein it\u2019s most advisable to do it. You can also choose to go to the nearest hospital or clinic that does HIV testing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Types_of_HIV_tests\"><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Types of HIV tests:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antibody test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Inspects if there are any HIV antibodies in your blood or oral fluids. This test can tell if you have HIV after 23 to 90 days of being exposed from the virus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antigen\/Antibody test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Checks for both HIV antibodies and antigens. It directly draws blood from the vein. This test can tell if you have HIV after 18 to 45 days of being exposed from the virus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nucleic Acid (NAT) test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Examines your blood to see if you have the HIV RNA or any traces of HIV. You can also get the results typically after 15 minutes, which is good for individuals who would like to regularly check for HIV.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Prevent_Getting_HIV\"><\/span><b>How to Prevent Getting HIV<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the ways HIV can be transmitted, sexual contact is what <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordhealthcare.org\/medical-conditions\/sexual-and-reproductive-health\/hiv-aids\/causes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanford Healthcare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claims as the prevalent cause why people are constantly being infected by the virus. Men who have sex with men and people with multiple sex partners are often prone to getting HIV. This goes the same to people who inject drugs \u2014 since they can potentially get HIV through a used syringe or needle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention is always better than cure. Hence, doing the following measures can significantly help you avoid getting HIV:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using a condom whenever you have sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choosing not to multiple different sexual partners<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not engaging in anal sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not using injection equipment already used by others<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not sharing your injection equipment with others<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above all, getting yourself and your partner tested for HIV before engaging in any sexual activity is the best way to prevent getting HIV and infecting others with the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) that enables those who don\u2019t have HIV but have a partner with HIV to be safe from transmission.
