GemGet 1 g is an intravenous chemotherapy drug that contains the active ingredient gemcitabine hydrochloride and is used for the treatment of various kinds of cancer like ovarian cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer among others.
GemGet hinders cancer cell DNA formation by copying a building block’s DNA, which stops cells from quickly dividing. This can be used on its own or in combination with other cancer medicines.
The gemcitabine drug class it is under is a group of medicines called antimetabolite. These are drugs that prevent cancer cells from reproducing, thus stopping it from making more cancer cells to spread in the body. It works by tricking the cells to use it instead of metabolites, also known as the molecules that it particularly needs for the creation of its genetic material.
Gemcitabine chemotherapy is administered intravenously, meaning that it’s delivered to the bloodstream via drip. A central line, PICC line, or portacath — all that are long plastic tubes — may be placed in a large vein inside your chest and will remain there throughout the course of your treatment (generally 30 minutes). There can be instances as well wherein a cannula is inserted to go into a vein in your arm.
Intravesical gemcitabine is also another chemotherapy treatment that is used specifically for bladder cancer. It’s administered directly to your bladder through a urinary catheter and stays there for 1 to 2 hours before it’s drained out with the same medical device, or can be urinated out as well.
You may be discouraged from using this chemotherapy drug by your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, and trying to conceive. The same goes if you recently had chicken pox, shingles, or have other health conditions like kidney disease, severe liver disease, and have existing issues with your lungs or with breathing.
Gemcitabine prices in the Philippines vary depending on the pharmacy that you’re buying it from.
